Jo Anna Perrin Narration Coaching

Audiobook narration incorporates the art of storytelling combined with delivering the truth of the author, and the honed technique of honest acting.

While an acting background is beneficial, it is not a mandate. I can walk aspiring narrators through the basic language and concepts that will aid in performance, and already working narrators through existing bumps in the road.  All I ask is that you bring a desire to be imaginative and allow yourself to be creative.

A brief version of my theatre education includes a BA in Theatre and Performance, study at Ensemble Studio with Curt Dempster, and at the Stella Adler studio, among others. I have studied various methodologies including Stanislavsky and Grotowski.– I do not expect you to have or need the same extensive training.

Instead my methodology is based on what I call Honest Acting. It’s natural acting at its core. I distill simple goals of acting technique that can easily be applied to the craft of narration regardless of whether you are a newbie or already on the road to success.

My approach is based on acquiring performance values that enable the narrator to deliver on both the challenges of Non-Fiction, with its additional technical demands, as well as Fiction.  We will work on the technique necessary—-storytelling, acting, character development, discovery–for the narrator to deliver the story as truthfully as possible, while remaining open to the concept of discovery, and is designed for future and experienced narrators.

Strategic Coaching:  All levels

You can choose tactical coaching which is more accommodating and flexible, and choose your goals to explore, whether starting at step one in storytelling, introduction to narration, cold reading and audition help,  assistance  with a difficult audition, or specific problems that need addressing. Short term or long term, or for a simple tune-up, it is your choice.

Structured Coaching:  All Levels

A curriculum that begins with the basics of acting and storytelling, and discovery, moves on to character creation techniques and development. You can choose to pursue Non-Fiction, Fiction, or both. If you are already on your narration way and need help for a specific problem in a longer time frame, this might be for you. I work with narrators either via phone or /Skype/Zoom/Facetime in 60-minute sessions designed for the needs and abilities of each individual student.

Session fee: $160 for each one-hour session payable through PayPal or Venmo, due in advance of session.
